THE THEORY OF LANGUAGE 1
Language is
structural view
The first and
the most traditional of the language’s theories is language is structural view.
It views the language as a system of related elements
structurally for the coding of meaning. Elements in this case refer to the phonological units (phonemes), lexical items (function words and
structure word) grammatical unit
(clause, phrases, and sentence).
“Although the
language is arbitrary, it does not mean that we can create a sentence freely
without limitation and conventionality. We can imagine that what will happen if
we use our private language or sentences to communicate with the other people.
Of course the culture shock will happen, no one will understand and
misunderstanding will dominate the interaction. That is not language because
language is to understand each other’s.
We can’t to
say “Boke” to address the thing to be
place to write but it has special structure of the character to write or to say
it, “book”. When we want to know
something, we cannot say “that what is?”
or “whet is dot” but we have to say what is that? Etc. each of the language has
a special structure that is conventional to use by the user.
In our mother
tongue sasak also, it is the same. “Lalo”
for “go” may not be changed with “lola” it has special lexical item. “Aku lalo ojok peken nane” may not be
changed with “ojok nane peken lalo aku”.
It has a special grammatical unit to use it.
in the
beginning the specialist considered that structure is the most important thing
to be the base of teaching language. It was coursed by the reason above. Most
of the teacher give strong emphasize on structure when they teach language. The
teaching learning process will be spent to analyses the structure of sentences.
The formula or the patent of the sentences should be memorized by the students.
The communication is not the target of the teaching learning process but how to
remember the patent of sentence structure is the priority one.
Maybe you
still remember that the situation in teaching learning of English in the beginning
of your class. In 1993 I was in junior high school the first class at there that
was the first time I learned English in my life. Before coming there I imagined
that it was so happy if I could speak English. I prepared myself by buying some
books. I got 900, that is the special book that content of dialogues. Every day
before attend to the class for the new season I
always read it enthusiastically with the mind that was pulled of intention to
be the best in English lesson. The hope was not same with reality that I found in
the class. My teacher gave us freezer on remembering the sentence rule or tenses
and it confused me. In the climax of my confuse I bought a big paper and wrote
all of the patents on it. I stack it at the sky of my room. I started to
memorize by looking up while laid down on my bad but until now I never memorize
it.
